BA/MA Program

 

  • The BA/MA Program is not appropriate for all students. Only students that meet the  Preliminary Criteria are considered for  admission into the BA/MA Program.

  • The program is designed for a student who is planning on pursuing a PhD in Economics or a Law Degree.

  • The Master’s Degree earned in the  BA/MA Program is not the same as a regular Master’s. It is designed only to enhance the application of those entering a PhD program

 


Preliminary Criteria

A student must meet ALL of the following criteria before contacting the Undergraduate Advisor about being considered for application to the program.

  • Economics major, preferably College of Science, must be declared

  • Plans on completing a PhD in Economics or pursing a Law degree

  • Junior or Senior status

  • No more than 12 hours of Economics electives remaining

  • ECON 4304 is not completed

  • No more than 6 hours of ECON courses have been transferred

  • Overall GPA must be at least 3.500

  • In-Major GPA must be at least 3.500

  • ECON 3104 must be completed with at least a B+. This course cannot be transferred or be in-progress.

  • ECON 3204 must be completed with at least a B+. This course cannot be transferred or be in-progress.

  • STAT 3005 must be completed with at least a B+. This course cannot be transferred or be in-progress.

  • MATH 1205, 1206, 1114, and 2224 or MATH 1225, 1226, 2114, and 2224 must be completed with at least a B+ in each course. These courses cannot be in-progress. No other MATH courses can be substituted for these.

  • An Application for Degree must be completed in Hokie Spa

 

Once a student meets all of the criteria listed above the student will need to email the Undergraduate Advisor. The Undergraduate Advisor will review the student’s record and determine if the student can meet the requirements of the program.

 

Requirements of the Program

Students in the program will complete courses at both the Undergraduate and Graduate level to complete the program. Each course must be completed after the student is accepted into the program.

  • ECON 4304 – Econometric Methods

  • ECON 5005 – Prices and Markets (Pt. 1)

  • ECON 5006 – Prices and Markets (Pt. 2)

  • ECON 5015 – Money and Price Levels

  • ECON 5124 – Mathematical Methods in Economics

  • No more than 6 hours from ECON 4074, 4084, 4404, 4424

  • 5000 level ECON Electives to complete the total 30 hours required for the BA/MA program.

 

Admission into the Program

Students that are admitted into the program will be required to follow the plan of course work created by the Undergraduate Advisor. Once the student reaches their final term in the Bachelor’s of Arts program they will be required to submit an application to the Virginia Tech Graduate School in order to continue in the program. Once in the Graduate portion of the program the student will then work with the Graduate Coordinator to finish the program.
