Free Electives

The major academic difference between the two programs is the number of free electives the two programs allow students and what students can do with these. The Economics, College of Business (ECON) major allows students about 26 hours of free electives. Due to this few number of free electives it is difficult for a student in ECON to Double Major especially in a major outside of the College of Business. This limits the advantages to earning a double major.

The Economics, College of Science (ECAS) major allows students about 50 hours of free electives. Due to the number of free electives students in ECAS are strongly encouraged to Double Major in majors in the College of Science and any of the other colleges, especially those majors in the colleges of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and Engineering. Students that decide not to double major are encouraged to declare multiple minors to provide focus to their degree. The number of free electives in the ECAS program allow students lots of choices in determining their courses.

  • MATH 1205, 1206, and 1114 or 1225, 1226, and 2114. These Calculus and Linear Algebra sequences are preferred for students majoring in both Economics, College of Science (ECAS) and Economics, College of Business (ECON). Each course must be completed with at least a C-.

  • MATH 1015, 1016, and 2015 or 1014, 1025, and 1026. These Elementary and Intermediate Calculus with Matrices sequences are allowed for students majorin in Economics, College of Science (ECAS) but not Economics, College of Business (ECON). Each course must be completed with at least a B-.
