Facts about Internships

4. The maximum amount of credit for full-time (40 hours a week) is 3 credit hours during the regular academic year or summer. Students working part-time or less than the entire term will receive porportionately less credit.

5. Credit is Pass/Fail and DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS any Economics (ECAS or ECON) major requirement. Credit earned for an internship cannot be used toward the 15 hours of ECON Elective hours required.

6. The credit hours earned will count as Free Elective credit.

7. Tuition must be paid to Virginia Tech to earn credit for an internship.

Internship Process

The process for an internship begins during the Course Request period for the term in which the internship will take place. A Request to Intern form must be printed, completed, and submitted to the Undergraduate Advisor. If the student meets the academic criteria above the Undergraduate Advisor will then send the student the Employer-Student Internship Agreement. This agreement must be completed by both the employer/supervisor of the internship and the student before the end of the current semester. The student's request will then be evaluated and if approved the internship credit will be added to the student's schedule.

At the beginning of the internship the student will be given the Student Progress Report in which the student will be required to log all tasks and experiences. The employer will be given the Employer Progress Report in which the employer will be required to log all tasks undertaken by the student and their evaluation of the student's performance. This will be submitted via email to the Undergraduate Advisor at the midpoint of the term in which the internship is taking place.

At the end of the internship or the end of the term in which credit is being earned the student will submit a Final Report to the Undergraduate Advisor via email by the last day of classes in the term. The employer will also submit a Final Report to the Undergraduate Advisor via email by the last day of class in the term.
