Alternative Progress Toward Degree Plan

An Alternative Progress Toward Degree is a plan that a student is placed on by the Undergraduate Advisor if they are going to fail to meet the Progress Toward Degree requirements as stated on the department Checksheets. This plan must be followed as written each semester. Should a student fail to complete the plan at any point a hold will be placed on their account and they will be required to change their major from Economics.

If a student is changing their major to Economics and has already attempted enough hours that they will exceed 72 credit hours and not have the required courses complete the student will be placed on a New Major Alternative Progress Toward Degree Plan by the Undergraduate Advisor when they meet to discuss the student changing their major to Economics.

If a student has attempted 55-71 credit hours but failed to complete all courses required to satisfy the department's 72 hour progress toward degree requirement the Undergraduate Advisor will notify them in the semester prior to the 72 hours being attempted. It is up to the student to meet with the Undergraduate Advisor before the deadline stated in the email and have an Alternative Progress Toward Degree Plan on file.

Application for Degree

You have declared your major as Economics but you still need to Apply for Your Degree. To apply for your degree means that you have submitted via Hokie Spa an official request to the Registrar's Office to assign you to a particular graduation term.

You are required to apply for degree before the end of the second semester of your Junior year.

This will allow you and your advisor to generate a DARS Report that is specific to your graduation term. Also it will notify departments on campus of your intent to graduate so that they can make sure you receive the proper information regarding everything related to Commencement.

Authorization to Take Courses Elsewhere

Students may take courses at other institutions during any semester or term. However, the student must complete the Authorization to Take Courses Elsewhere form on which the student will list all of the courses they are planning to take. Those courses will be reviewed and approved as courses equivalent to Virginia Tech courses. The approval process can take several weeks so students shoudl submit the completed form 4-6 weeks prior to the start of the term in which the courses will be taken.

Once the course is complete the student will need to have the other institution send an official transcript to the Virginia Tech Registrar's Office for processing.
